All schools and colleges must develop and implement a sun protection policy. The Department for Education, Children and Young People recommends that all schools and colleges join the National School SunSmart Program to assist in the development of their policy.
Over-exposure to UV (ultraviolet) rays causes sunburn, skin damage and increased risk of skin cancer. Inappropriate sun exposure in the first 18 years of life contributes significantly to the lifetime risk of developing skin cancer.
Schools play a significant role in reducing the lifetime risk of skin cancer. Our sun protection policy has been developed to ensure that all students, staff and the school community are protected from skin damage caused by harmful UV radiation from the sun.
Sun protection is required when UV levels are 3 and above. In Tasmania, the UV is 3 and above usually from September to April. Therefore, schools need to implement sun protection measures from the beginning of the school year until the end of April and again from the beginning of September until the end of the school year. Implementing sun protection measures throughout Terms 1 and 4 only is insufficient to protect against UV rays risks.
At MHPS we encourage the following combination of sun protection measures from September to April, when average peak UV levels in Tasmania reach 3 and above:
- Sun-safe clothing
- Sunscreen
- Sun-safe hats
- Shade
- Sunglasses

On Wednesday 4 September our school held our Crazy Hair Day fundraiser. Many of our teachers and students came to school with coloured or styled hair. With our gold coin donations, we were able to raise just over $260. The funds we raised will be donated to the Leukaemia Foundation.
We would like to say a huge well done to the courageous Mason. Mrs Hodge cut his wonderful long locks in front of the whole school. Mason will also be donating the money he raised.
On behalf of the SRC team thank you to all of those who participated and helped on the day. We are proud to be donating to such an important cause.
Thank you!

Term 3 Communicating Learning Progress with Families
At MHPS, families are valued members of the school community and play an important role in their child’s learning. There is a strong culture of mutual trust, and parents/carers and staff work in partnership to support student learning and well-being. This is evidenced by the outstanding attendance data at our previous two communication opportunities, in March we had 95% of our students represented and in June we had 93% of our students represented.
Communicating Learning Progress with Families for all students from Kindergarten to Year 6 are underway, and conclude on Wednesday 18 September. This is our third opportunity to formally communicate about learning this year and once again we are providing two options for communication in Term 3.
Parents/carers can choose either a face-to-face conversation at school or a phone call from your child's teacher.
The conversation will focus on any follow-up matters from the June meeting, evidence of learning, progress and strategies for improvement, and your child’s wellbeing.
Students are not required to be part of this meeting. Childcare will be available for school aged students in the PAC.
A letter was sent home on Monday 19 August, containing the details you need to know, a preference sheet for dates and times, and an agenda where you can record anything you would like to discuss. Please return the preference sheet and agenda to class teachers as soon as possible. it is not too late to arrange an appointment.
Family School Satisfaction Survey
Every year the Department for Education, Children and Young People conducts a School Satisfaction Survey to find out what schools do well and where they may improve.
We would be so grateful if families could complete our online survey about Mowbray Heights Primary School. Your feedback is very important and helps form school planning and decision-making.
The survey is open until Friday 20 September 2024 and should take about 5 minutes to complete.
Each family should nominate one person to fill in this survey for their child(ren).
Take the online survey by clicking this Link, or pasting it in your browser: https://nam.dcv.ms/qEDFA5rUiJ
The survey is carried out on a secure website and all responses are anonymous and confidential.
All families in this school receive the same survey link and no identifying information is collected. A summary of the survey results will be provided to schools. Responses from individuals or small groups will not be disclosed to any Department for Education, Children and Young People staff.
Please contact us if you require any assistance and thank you for taking the time to fill in this survey.
