- Community News
At MHPS, families are valued members of the school community and play an important role in their child’s learning. There is a strong culture of mutual trust, and parents/carers and staff work in partnership to support student learning and well-being. This is evidenced by the outstanding attendance data at our previous two communication opportunities, in March we had 95% of our students represented and in June we had 93% of our students represented.
Communicating Learning Progress with Families for all students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will take place again, in September. This is our third opportunity to formally communicate about learning this year and once again we are providing two options for communication in Term 3.
Parents/carers can choose either a face-to-face conversation at school or a phone call from your child's teacher.
The conversation will focus on any follow-up matters from the June meeting, evidence of learning, progress and strategies for improvement, and your child’s wellbeing.
Students are not required to be part of this meeting. Childcare will be available for school aged students in the PAC.
Coming home on Monday is a letter containing the details you need to know, a preference sheet for dates and times, and an agenda where you can record anything you would like to discuss. Please return the preference sheet and agenda to class teachers as soon as possible.

This week, our top spellers in Year 3 - 6 were invited to participate in the school round of the Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee. Students were required to spell 30 words with a time limit of 25 seconds for each word.
Students’ results are ranked according to the accuracy of their spelling and the time taken to spell each word. This first round of the competition closes on 23 August, when we will find out if anyone from Mowbray Heights Primary School has made it into the State final.
All students involved demonstrated courage and persevered with some very challenging words. They did their very best and their efforts were exceptional!

Book Week Dress Up Day and Colouring Competition
Every year, the Children's Book Council of Australia holds the CBCA Book Week to celebrate books and reading. This year the theme is "Reading is Magic" and we are excited to be celebrating across our school.
Book Week Dress Up Day is on Wednesday 21 August
Students can choose to dress as a book character, a non fiction character such as a sports star, or come in their uniform as a Mowbray reader! We would like this day to be accessible to all, so please do not feel like you need to go to any expense - it's amazing what bits and pieces you might have at home to create a costume! Please note that toy weapons are not to be brought to school.
Book Week Colouring In Competition
All students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will have the opportunity to enter the competition, with winners announced during Book Week. Petrarchs' Book Shop has kindly donated vouchers for our winners, and we have also had a lovely donation of some 'Dunstan and Theodore' books from Mrs Sharon Booth.
Entry forms are available from the Library.
I look forward to celebrating with everyone!

Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey
The wellbeing of our students is important to us - we want to hear how students feel, and think, about different things going on in their lives.
Students in Year 4, 5 and 6 at Mowbray Heights Primary School will be taking part in the Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey. The results from this survey will help us get a picture of the current wellbeing of our students, and what we can do to improve future wellbeing for learning. The more students who take part, the clearer our picture will be.
The Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey is part of the Department’s Child and Student Wellbeing Strategy .
The details for the survey for our students are:
When: The week beginning 26 August, 2024
Who: Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 students
What do I need to do?: You and your child don’t need to do anything. The survey will be done in class time and will not require your child to prepare in any way.
A letter with more information was sent home last week with all Year 4, 5 and 6 students, including Frequently Asked Questions and a form to sign and return to school if you do not want your child to participate in the survey.
Thank you for supporting us to ensure that all our learners are known, safe, well and learning.

How to Prevent Tooth Decay
What is tooth decay?
- Tooth decay occurs when a hole forms in a tooth. This is called a cavity.
- Tooth decay can affect people of all ages. Baby teeth can decay as soon as they appear.
- Tooth decay is very common in children. It is the main reason for avoidable hospital visits of children under five.
Checking for tooth decay
- It is important to lift your child’s top lip regularly to check for signs.
- White lines along the gum line can be the beginning of tooth decay.
- If you notice any changes, please visit an oral health professional quickly. They can help reverse early stages of tooth decay.
Preventing tooth decay
Tooth decay is easy to avoid by ensuring your child:
- has good teeth cleaning habits
- enjoys healthy meals and drinks
- starts regular dental care from a professional from 12-months of age
More information can be found at Dental health for children | Tasmanian Department of Health
If you are an Australian citizen, permanent resident or asylum seeker you can book a free oral health check for your child by calling 1300 011 013.
Launching into Learning - Term 3
Thank you to all our families for attending our sessions so far this year.
Please note we have a new playgroup on Monday afternoon at 1:45 pm and Playgroup on Tuesday at 10:30 am will now be an additional Pre-Kinder session.
This term we are very excited to start work on our Kindergarten outdoor space, which will mean we do not have access to the playground in Term 3. To keep group sizes manageable, the Playgroup on Thursday at 9:00 am will now be for toddlers who are 2-3 years old and their siblings.
The times and sessions for Term 3 are attached. Please ask our staff if you have any questions.
