At Mowbray Heights we use a range of school based assessments to guide the teaching and learning program in our school. We also have a range of external assessments which contribute to our school based data.
Recently we received a summary of our 2024 NAPLAN results and whilst we acknowledge that this is just one piece of data about student performance, we are once again extremely pleased with our overall results.
In all areas (Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation, and Numeracy) in both Year 3 and Year 5, our results are well above similar schools with regard to the mean scores and the percentage of students categorised as strong or exceeding. This is an outstanding result!
Year 3 Mean scores are above Similar Schools in all domains
Reading +51, Writing +56, Spelling +69, Grammar & Punctuation +72, Numeracy +20
Year 5 Mean scores are above Similar Schools in all domains
Reading +44, Writing +42, Spelling +47, Grammar & Punctuation +38, Numeracy +19
At this stage we have not been provided with data that enables us to compare our mean score with Tasmanian or Australian averages. As soon as those data sets become available, I will share the comparisons with our school community.
The NAPLAN 2024 Individual Student Reports will be sent home to families today. Please be aware that this assessment was conducted in March, however if families have any questions regarding your child’s assessment do not hesitate to contact your child’s classroom teacher.
A consistent plan for improvement, explicit teaching, high expectations for learning and your support from home, have significantly contributed to these learning outcomes for the students at Mowbray Heights Primary School.
Together, we can justifiably celebrate this work.

A firefighter from the Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) is visiting our school to present a Home Fire Safety Program to the Year 3-4 classes and the Year 5-6 classes this week (29 July - 2 August). 3-4 Rafferty and our Early Childhood classes participated in the program earlier this term.
The age appropriate program is designed to raise fire awareness in children and includes fun in class activities, videos, activity books, website www.tfseducation.com.au and giveaways. Parents and other family members are also encouraged to participate by reading the information and assisting your child with the after school activities. The TFS aims to deliver appropriate fire safety education to every primary school child in Tasmania and is part of the TFS’s ongoing commitment to create a fire safe Tasmania.
Key Fire Safety Messages include,
Wake up - Install a smoke alarm in every bedroom
Plan and practice a home fire escape plan with the whole family
In a fire crawl low and go, go, go to the nearest exit
In an emergency call triple zero
Keep flammable material at least two metres from the heater
If your clothes catch fire, stop, drop, rock and roll
Keep matches and lighters away from children
Cooking - Turn it off before you turn away
Cool a burn under cool water for at least 20 minutes
Most house fires can be avoided. Make your home fire safe

Launching into Learning - Term 3
Thank you to all our families for attending our sessions so far this year.
Please note we have a new playgroup starting on Monday afternoon at 1:45 pm and Playgroup on Tuesday at 10:30 am will now be an additional Pre-Kinder session.
This term we are very excited to start work on our Kindergarten outdoor space, which will mean we do not have access to the playground in Term 3. To keep group sizes manageable, the Playgroup on Thursday at 9:00 am will now be for toddlers who are 2-3 years old and their siblings.
The times and sessions for Term 3 are attached. Please ask our staff if you have any questions.
