At MHPS families are valued members of the school community and play an important role in their child’s learning. There is a strong culture of mutual trust, and parents/carers and staff work in partnership to support student learning and well-being.
In June we are providing another opportunity for all parents/carers to have a face-to-face conversation with your child's teacher.
The Prep to Year 6 conversations will this time include your child. These Mid-year Learning Conversations will focus on progress, achievement and strategies for improvement, with your child present and participating in the conversation. This format will provide a great opportunity to celebrate progress and success, and to set goals for the remainder of the year. Student involvement encourages them to take responsibility for their learning and truly know that some of the most significant people in their lives are working together to support their learning and well-being.
Our Kindergarten students are not required to be present for the mid-year meeting. The conversation between parents/carers and teachers will focus on the progress your child has made towards achieving the markers on the Kindergarten Development Check. During the meeting you will have the opportunity to ask any questions and share information about your child.
Our Year 1 - Year 6 Mid-year Conversations commence on Tuesday 18 June and finish on Wednesday 26 June.
Our Kindergarten Mid-year Conversations commence on Monday 17 June and finish on Thursday 27 June.
Coming home today is a letter containing details you need to know, a preference sheet for dates and times, and an agenda where you can record anything you would like to discuss. Please return the preference sheet and agenda as soon as possible.
Our Specialist Teachers and members of the Leadership Team will be available to support families with childcare for school-age siblings whilst the Mid-year Conversations are happening. Childcare will be available in the Performing Arts Centre.
In line with Department for Education, Children and Young People requirements, a summative report will also be provided this term for students in Years 1 - 6, assessed against the Australian Curriculum using a nine point scale in English, Maths and Science. For students whose learning is not able to be assessed against the Australian Curriculum, a summative report of learning achievement against learning plan goals will be provided. Written comments will not be included in mid-year or end of year summative reports. Mid-year Reports go home on Friday 14 June.

Health Education with Nurse Pia
The cold weather has finally arrived and it can make it trickier to keep kids active. Getting plenty of exercise helps children to grow, learn and develop. Children between the ages of 5 to 12 years should be participating in at least one hour of moderate to vigorous exercise per day. Here are some great ideas for winter activities for everyone in the family.
A firefighter from the Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) is visiting our school to present a Home Fire Safety Program to a number of our classes during Week 5 of this term - 27 to 31 May. The classes involved during this week are the Prep classes, the Year 1-2 classes and 3-4 Rafferty. The remaining Year 3-4 classes and the Year 5-6 classes will have sessions in Week 2 of Term 3 – 29 July to the 2 August. Kindergarten students, whilst not receiving a structured lesson, can expect a visit from the firefighter who will leave some free fun activites for the students to complete.
The age appropriate program is designed to raise fire awareness in children and includes fun in class activities, videos, activity books, website www.tfseducation.com.au and giveaways. Parents and other family members are also encouraged to participate by reading the information and assisting your child with the after school activities. The TFS aims to deliver appropriate fire safety education to every primary school child in Tasmania and is part of the TFS’s ongoing commitment to create a fire safe Tasmania.
Key Fire Safety Messages include,
Wake up - Install a smoke alarm in every bedroom
Plan and practice a home fire escape plan with the whole family
In a fire crawl low and go, go, go to the nearest exit
In an emergency call triple zero
Keep flammable material at least two metres from the heater
If your clothes catch fire, stop, drop, rock and roll
Keep matches and lighters away from children
Cooking - Turn it off before you turn away
Cool a burn under cool water for at least 20 minutes
Most house fires can be avoided. Make your home fire safe

Year 3-4 Excursion to the Beaconsfield Mine and Heritage Centre
Year 3-4 classes will be participating in a guided tour of the Beaconsfield Mine and Heritage Centre, and visiting the Batman Bridge on the return to school. Buses will leave Mowbray Heights Primary School at 9:30 am and return by 3:00 pm.
Students will need to wear full school uniform and bring a warm jacket. Students will also need to bring recess, lunch and a drink. There will be no canteen orders available. When we arrive back at school students will each enjoy a fresh local apple.
Excursion dates:
Monday 3 June – 3-4 Sheedy, 3-4 Rafferty, 3-4 Marshall
Tuesday 4 June – 3-4 Boon-Smith, 3-4 Uffelmann
Year 3-4 Team
As families begin to get their winter clothes ready, we are hoping that any uniform items that your children have outgrown might be donated to school. These come in very handy when students have accidents, get wet or get muddy!
The following sizes are available in the 2024 Year 6 Leavers Polos. The tops are $35.00 and can be purchased at the school office. These are the last sizes available and no further orders will be placed.
