Congratulations to our Senior Girls and Senior Boys Basketball teams on their wonderful performances at the Primary School Basketball Tournament which was held last weekend.
Our Senior Girls team competed in Division 3 and won all four games! Our girls listened to their coach, improved in every game, and played as a team. Our Senior Boys competed in Division 2, winning two out of their four games. Our boys displayed strong defence, lots of run and excellent teamwork. We are so proud of both our teams!
Thank you very much to our fantastic coaches Priscilla Chilcott and Mel Hodge for your commitment to the teams and for the encouraging way you coached. Thank you also to our parents who supported the tournament, and finally thank you to all the staff who came along and cheered loudly for our teams.
Sharon

Year 6 Excursion to Launceston Church Grammar School
Students in Year 6 have been offered the opportunity to take part in the launch of Tasmanian Youth Week at the Launceston Church Grammar School on Thursday 10 April.
This experience will involve a morning of fun activities at LCGS. Students will walk across to the LCGS Senior Campus at 9:00am and return to MHPS at 1:30pm.
In the week prior to this excursion, Year 6 students will have the opportunity to design and create a t-shirt which they will wear to the event over their uniform.
Students will need recess, lunch and a drink on this day as they will not be able to access the canteen. Students will be supervised on this excursion by the Year 5/6 teachers.

Prep - Year 2 End of Term Movie
On Friday 11 April, Year 1-2 classes will be watching the movie Happy Feet (Rated G). In the world of the emperor penguins who find their soul mates through song, a penguin is born who cannot sing. But he can tap dance something fierce!
On Friday 11 April, students from Years 3-6 will be watching the movie, Ratatouille (Rated PG). The story follows a young rat named Remy, who dreams of becoming a chef at a famous Paris restaurant. He tries to achieve his goal by forming an unlikely alliance with the restaurant's garbage boy Alfredo Linguini.
The Buzz will be starting a new group of beginners in Term 2.
What is The Buzz?
- The Buzz is a beginner brass band facilitated by volunteer members of the City Of Launceston RSL Band.
- Instruments on offer are cornet, trombone, trombone mini and euphonium. All learner instruments are made of plastic and are ideal for children.
- The Buzz lessons are weekly on a Thursday afternoon from 3:10 pm - 4:00 pm. Lessons take place in the school PAC. Students will need to be collected from the PAC at 4:00 pm.
- There is no charge for lessons, instrument hire or book hire. We do expect that all students will take care of borrowed instruments and books and be responsible for bringing them to school on Thursdays.
Learning any musical instrument is a challenge and requires patience, persistence, a positive attitude and plenty of practice. Learning a brass instrument has the added challenge of producing a sound (a buzz). Students who join The Buzz need to be prepared to practise at home in order to make progress on their instrument.
If your child is interested in joining The Buzz they can see Mrs Partridge for more information. You can also email Mrs Partridge at cherie.partridge@decyp.tas.gov.au if you have any queries.

Managing Screen Time for Primary School Children
As our children grow and learn, technology plays an increasing role in their daily lives. While screens can be an exciting and valuable tool for learning and communication, it’s important to ensure that children’s screen time is balanced with physical activity, sleep, and face-to-face interactions.
According to the Raising Children Network, it’s recommended that children aged 5 to 12 spend no more than 2 hours a day on recreational screen activities, such as watching TV or playing video games. These activities should not interfere with time spent on physical activity, or family interactions.
Excessive screen time can lead to poor posture, sleep disturbances, and feelings of isolation, anxiety, or stress. Encouraging regular breaks, physical activity, and social interactions supports overall well-being.
Practical Tips for Parents and Caregivers
- Set Screen Time Limits: The Raising Children Network suggests setting consistent limits on screen time and making sure it doesn't interfere with other important activities like homework, chores, or outdoor play.
- Encourage Active Screen Time: Not all screen time is created equal. Look for educational games, apps, or shows that encourage problem-solving, creativity, or learning.
- Create Tech-Free Zones: Designate areas, such as the dining room or bedrooms, as screen-free zones to encourage family interaction and better sleep hygiene.
- Be a Role Model: Children often mimic the behaviour of adults. Set a good example by limiting your own screen time during family activities and show the value of face-to-face communication.
- Prioritise Outdoor Play and Exercise: Encourage children to spend more time outdoors, whether it’s playing sports, riding bikes, or simply going for a walk. Physical activity is a key component of overall health and development.
- Discuss the Content: Talk with your child about the content they access online. Understand what apps, games, and websites they are using, and ensure these are appropriate for their age.
By maintaining a balance between screen time, physical activity, and social interactions, we can help ensure that our children are growing up in a healthy and well-rounded environment. As a school community, we all play a part in helping children develop healthy screen habits that will serve them well in the future.
